Computer Defense for the Common Man And Woman

Even Corporate Execs Can Be Victims

Posted by ThePaladin on May 6th, 2008

A rather interesting story appeared on Yahoo News regarding scam artists going after corporate executives (Click here for the original story).

It seems that the perpetrators managed to get their hands on the email addresses of thousands of top executives. They then fabricated subpoenas as online documents, after which they then mailed links to these documents to the executives, posing as the U.S. Federal Court in San Diego, California. A link was provided in the email so that the “big boys and girls” could link to the subpoena.

Well, if they clicked on they link they DID get to see a rather official looking document. However, the page they were directed to also installed software on the exec’s computer. Imagine a program that logs keystrokes being installed on a corporate executive’s laptop! I suspect that during the course of a single day A LOT of private information (user names, passwords, information) would be captured.

It turns out that a relatively large percentage of these executives fell for it.

Recall what the Paladin has said in the past…that your greatest weapon against the “anti-programmers” in defending your computer will be your knowledge. Isn’t it marvelous to learn that this principle applies to business executives as well?
